Jair Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities found he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under home confinement.
The ex-president was sentenced of planning a government overthrow in the ninth month and sentenced more than over two decades in jail, but he remained under house arrest pending legal challenges.
Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the move to detain the elderly politician was a safety action after recent developments emerged.
This included trying to remove his electronic bracelet and a summons to a supporters' gathering that could enable a potential flight.
Legal Document Reveals Escape Risks
In a document approving the arrest, Justice Moraes said data from the centre monitoring the former president's confinement suggested the one-time head of state's "intention to break the electronic ankle bracelet to guarantee victory in his flight.
This, it said, would be "facilitated by the chaos caused by the protest called by his son.
His child, Flávio Bolsonaro, who works as a legislator, called for a meeting of his supporters near the former president's residence to take place on the weekend.
Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on digital networks on Friday: "Are you going to fight for your nation, or watch it all from your smartphone there on your couch? I invite you to battle with us."
He said the demonstration would be so backers could seek divine intervention for his well-being and for the restoration of democratic rule in our nation."
Foreign Shelter Risks
Part of Justice Moraes's ruling was the possibility of the former president's "relocation to foreign missions near the residence, considering that the inquiries revealed a history of planning to seek refuge through a diplomatic representation", a statement said.
The judicial paperwork underscores that the United States embassy in the capital, the capital city, is located around 8 miles from his dwelling.
Worldwide Consequences
Bolsonaro's legal woes have provoked anger from fellow right-wing populist American leader Donald Trump, causing him to enact a half-rate duty on Brazilian product imports.
He is being kept in a Federal Police station in Brazil's capital city and will experience a imprisonment assessment on the next day.
Latest Court Petitions
It was only on Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Supreme Court to permit him to serve his whole jail sentence under house arrest, with digital surveillance.
They also petitioned that he be allowed to exit his dwelling for healthcare, saying he needed ongoing care for respiratory ailments and other illnesses.
Details of Guilty Verdict
Bolsonaro was found guilty of heading a scheme aimed at keeping him in power after he lost the national vote to his left-wing rival, President Lula.
Supreme Court justices said that he was aware of a plan which encompassed plans to kill Lula and his vice-presidential running mate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to imprison and murder the presiding judge - the Supreme Court justice who has been presiding over his judicial proceedings.
The conspiracy was stopped because it didn't receive the endorsement of the armed forces officials. The current president was took office without incident on 1 January 2023.
But a week later, on the eighth of January, many Bolsonaro supporters invaded and destroyed official structures in the capital, Brazil's capital.
The security forces intervened and around fifteen hundred individuals were taken into custody.
The justices found that the demonstrators had been incited by him whose scheme, they said, was for the national armed forces to step in, reestablish control and reinstate his authority.
At the time, the legal team called the over 27-year sentence unreasonably severe".
He was also prohibited from campaigning for office until 2060 - eight years later after the conclusion of his imprisonment.
The ex-leader called the trial a "witch hunt and said it was intended to stop him running in the 2026 national vote.
